The ability to select various buttons and close the lid is just the icing on the cake. Sleep and Hibernate mode make my life very easy. The occasional shutdown also helps Windows performance, as several users have noted. Installing Windows updates and sometimes uninstalling apps requires a complete shutdown and reboot. No open jobs will be saved when you shut down the computer. Should you turn off your laptop? And the answer is yes because there are subtle differences between the two as well. Difference between Hibernate and Shutdown I don’t use fast-startup because I prefer to shut down my laptop completely. Note that installing Windows updates requires a full shutdown and reboot, which can then be done using the Restart option. Windows then uses this file to reboot, making the process much faster. This file contains an image of your driver and kernel. What’s that? Think of it as a hybrid sleep mode where Windows will create a hiber file to save the current state of Windows. There is another option called Turn on fast start-up, and it is also recommended. You can decide whether you want to see sleep and hibernate options in the Power menu or not. There are many settings available at the bottom which will be available to change when you click on Change settings not currently available at the top. This setting makes it very quick and easy to use Sleep and Hibernation. Plus, you don’t need to open the Windows Start menu to shut down your laptop this way. I have set the power button to shut down my laptop since hibernation and sleep are taken care of. If your laptop has one, you can put it to sleep, hibernate, or turn off display settings. Some laptops come with a special Sleep button. So, why not save battery power? Select the hibernate option here. Correct? In such a situation, it’s better to put the laptop in hibernation mode because you won’t be using the laptop anytime soon. What will I do? Close the lid and pack up the laptop. Say, I’m on a long break or maybe traveling via Uber somewhere. Again, there are two columns for On battery and Plugged in. Go back and now click Choose what closes the lid. Choose a number then adjust it to your work style. You don’t want to put it to sleep while you’re just staring at the screen-that would be really weird. Select the number of minutes before the laptop goes to sleep mode from the drop-down menu. Then you can press any key on the keyboard to turn on the screen. Turning off the screen will only turn off the screen, but the system and underlying processes will still be running. However, you should because wasting energy isn’t cool. No need to conserve battery when the laptop is plugged in. Right-click the battery icon in the system tray to open Power Options under Control Panel. Find a balance to optimize the way you work on your laptop. Windows 10 comes with several power and battery settings that will make your life easier. Add battery to the mix, and it’s not hard to choose between the two. The difference between Sleep and Hibernation is seconds and minutes. Most modern laptops will go into hibernation mode when the battery runs out while in Sleep mode. Note that if your laptop runs out of power while in Sleep mode, you will lose all unsaved work as it is all stored in RAM working memory is not a hard drive. Hibernation is perfect for when you don’t have time to charge your battery, and need your laptop to last as long as possible. If you are going to be away for a long time, Hibernation is a better alternative.Įven though both are power saving modes, sleep mode still consumes battery power. You can use Sleep mode if you plan to resume work on your laptop soon.
